Are you a young person who is interested in getting more involved in the work of our office?
We believe that young people benefit when their voices are heard, and their perspectives are considered. Their involvement in our work helps us grow our understanding of young people’s rights, interests, and viewpoints, and to have those reflected across our organization.
There are different ways to be involved so that we hear your voice, consider your perspective and learn from you:
- One-time consultations: Give your feedback on issues and projects our office is working on, like focus groups for reports and hiring panels.
- Special events and opportunities: Speak on youth panels, participate in interviews, or attend conferences and community events.
- Youth internships and practicums: Support the work of the OCYA Youth Council, represent our office at community events and engage with community groups to share information about our office.
- Student employment opportunities: Check our jobs page regularly for updates.
There are many benefits of being involved:
- You can help other children and youth.
- You can assist in creating better systems for other young people.
- You can develop skills like critical thinking, leadership and organizational skills.
For more information on how you can get involved, please email Lee Bowers, Manager of Youth Initiatives at lee.bowers@ocya.alberta.ca or call us at 1-800-661-3446.
OCYA Youth Council
The OCYA Youth Council provides input, advice, and feedback on our initiatives and ongoing work. The council meets bi-monthly to inform the work of our office. They also receive requests to consult from external groups and meet with government leaders to offer their ideas for improving services and supports for young people.
The OCYA Youth Council is guided by the OCYA values of having integrity, approaching situations with respect, and working in collaboration when providing their insights, advice and feedback.
- Are 14–24 years old.
- Serve terms of two years and are supported by a mentor.
- Have lived experience with the child intervention or youth justice system.
- Are open to input from others and help create safe spaces for young people to amplify their voices.
- Give honest feedback on issues that impact youth.
At times, graduating council members volunteer to provide ongoing mentorship to new members. They provide a unique form of support and guidance as someone who has experience as a member of the OCYA Youth Council. They attend meetings, provide coaching to other youth, and help facilitate activities.
- Are a supportive adult identified by the potential council member.
- Are 25 years or older.
- Help to arrange meeting transportation for council members when needed.
- Help create space for council members to share, respect young people’s opinions, and elevate youth voices; a mentor should be someone who has or is building a supportive or encouraging relationship with a young person.
- Check in prior to the meeting to see if the young person feels prepared and able to participate.
- Encourage the young person to share their thoughts to the best of their ability, and to help them formulate their thoughts on topics being covered.
Young people can express their interest in joining by calling the OCYA or sending us a short email to let us know how we can best reach you. Supportive adults and allies can also help refer young people. Contact us at 1-800-661-3446 or youthcouncil@ocya.alberta.ca.
